2015 CRV Pinot Noir - Estate Grown
Pinot yields were so low in 2015, we had to venture just down the frontage road to Michael Valentine (part of the Cleary Ranch Family Estate, farmed by John’s brother Mike and sister Cindy) for the final 20% of the fruit that went into our Cleary Ranch Estate Pinot Noir. A blend of two clones, 115 and 667, result in a wonderfully nuanced, crimson red, spice-driven wine. Aged for 12 months in 35% new French oak, it starts with a signature Freestone aromatic of sweet tobacco leaf and cigar box that lead to fresh and fragrant mandarin orange and cherry blossom. On the palate, we experience captivating tones of mulberry, bright cherry and black raspberry, trailed by earth-driven impressions of wild mushroom and forest floor right after the rain. Gentle and ripe tannin adds backbone to the whole ensemble. Delicious after a couple hours in a decanter right now, this should easily cellar for another 4-7 years.
